Of the others, two still work with Rufus and his new partner, two have more or less gone their own way and just do their own thing, and one moved to Norway. All the rest work together in a Thelemic group, as well as in Wiccan covens, and a more traditional Magical Lodge. I'm not a good teacher for people who need that kind of direction. I'm more the kind that answers a question with another question, and try to get people to look for the answers within themselves, rather than from me. I always tell them that I can explain how doing a certain ritual affected me, but not necessarily how it will affect them. The people who need things a bit more absolute than that aren't too comfortable with my style. It may not be the best teaching method in the world, but I don't really change my style to accommodate people who aren't comfortable with it. I believe they'd be better off with someone who teaches that way naturally, than by having me try to change to be something I'm not. What about you? I know you've taught groups, so how do you handle this kind of thing? >> Cross your legs and hold your breath for ten days? RD> He's BACK! :> I un-crossed my legs and exhaled about six hours RD> ago. It's been a while since I read the book, but I've just flicked it, and can't spot a reference to Budge. TI> and in Christopher MacIntoshes' and Ellic Howe's GD TI> books, the name of which escapes me. (Something like Twilight of TI> the Magicians, and The Last Magicians, or some such.) The only one of McIntosh's books I still have is "Eliphas Levi and the French Occult Revival", so it's no good me checking that one :) He did write another which (from memory) summarised various authors and personalities of the 19th/20th century occult revivals... I can't remember the title, though. I haven't got Ellic Howe's book, but "Golden Dawn: Twilight of the Magicians" is by RA Gilbert, and he does mention Budge. On p73 (starting 72): "The researches of Frater Sacramentum Regis, in communication with the famous Egyptologist Sir Wallis Budge [E.A.], made evident that the alleged ciphers, considerable portions of which were written on watermark paper of 1808, had been so prepared with intent to deceive..." Doesn't say that Budge was in the GD, though it doesn't say he wasn't, either. For interest, I've been told by a number of people that the GD Lodge equipment is still in the basement of the BM, though like most urban myths, I've never met anyone who has actually seen it with their own eyes ;-) Some years ago, Rufus and I and a couple of our group members visited the house at 36 Blythe Road. It was being renovated, so we had the place to ourselves, and could wander around as we wanted. The owner had told us that he had always had *real* problems keeping tenants (it was split into 3 or 4 apartments), and had never been able to work out why .
