From: Josh Norton Area: Thelema To: Frater H.A.C.A. 23 Jul 94 16:58:02 Subject: Portal signs Rec'd UpdReq Thus said Frater H.a.c.a. to All concerning Portal signs: FH> I have a question concerning the Portal signs as used in the Greater FH> Ritual of the Pentagram. I have read that to invoke spirit FH> (active or passive) you rend the veil, and to banish spirit FH> (active or passive) you close the veil. I have also read FH> that you should rend the veil for active Spirit FH> Pentagrams(invoking or banishing) and close the veil for FH> passives (invoking or banishing). I've always done it the FH> first way. I'm curious to hear how the rest of you learned FH> the ritual and perform it. Love is the law, love under will. The idea behind these signs is that there is a veil or curtain between the mundane world (the four elements) and the world of the spirit. (See my message today to Walter Five in the QBL echo, subject: "Veil of Paroketh".) When you perform the Rending sign, you are figuratively tearing down the curtain between yourself and the spirit, allowing it to enter into the world. By extension, you use this sign for breaking into any new magickal space, as Crowley did a couple of places in _Vision and the Voice_. Thus you would use it for invoking either the "active" or "passive" pentagrams of Spirit. The closing sign, OTOH, is a symbolic "sealing off" of the spirit from the world, a hiding of the mysteries. By extension, you use it to close off any links or gates at the end of a ceremony. The way I learned the Greater Pent. Ritual, one draws the pentagram of Spirit, performs the Rending sign, and then visualizes the spiritual force flooding into the area of work through the center of the pentagram, filling up the circle like water filling up a cylidrical drinking glass. If you are doing an invoking ritual, you leave it at that, and go on to do the appropriate elemental pentagram for the quarter. If you are banishing, you visualize the spirit flooding _out_ of the circle and back through the pentagram, washing out any unwanted stuff in the circle and carrying it away. Once all the spirit has flowed out, you do the Closing sign to seal off the entryway again. ... It all sounds suspiciously post-modern to me. ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.10 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718 From: Paul Hume Area: Thelema To: All 24 Jul 94 16:19:48 Subject: Gerald's Book Is Out UpdReq Dear folks - 93. In case you haven't seen it yet, I should tell you that our brother Thomas, who is an asst. mgr. at a Borders Books, brought in a copy of Gerald Del Campo's new book at our meeting yesterday (and donated it to the Camp library, bless him). New Aeon Magick: Thelema Without Tears. Gerald Del Campo, Llewellyn Books, 1994. $9.99. Gerald has written a more personal testament to the New Aeon than Lon Duquette's recent (and also excellent) release from Weiser: Magick of Thelema. This perception may be a matter of style. Gerald writes throughout in the second person, since, as he explains in the preface, the book was originally written as an instruction for his children. Each chapter is brief, and like the original Magick Without Tears, addresses some specific area of importance to the student. Typical headings are: What Is Magick?; The Qabalah; The Great Work; The Holy Guardian Angel; Ordeals; Knowledge; Corage; Silence; Life; Death. For those looking for instruction in the basic premises of Thelema as philosophy, this is an excellent source of ideas and insight. I am particularly happy to see that it includes "Duty," an essay of Crowley's which discusses very plainly how one puts Thelema into action in everyday life, and which has not been widely distributed until now - though well known in the OTO and similar groups. Those of us who know the author will not be surprised to find passionate discussion of the necessity of saving and preserving the biosphere of our planet, both as Thelemites and as beings who have to live here. Cogent discussions of diet and its effects, and the use of fasts and their effects, also come as no surprise given Gerald's long time study of these matters, and the articles we have seen from him in RPSTOVAL Review. On the magical side, Gerald has mapped out a simple but strict course of study for the "first year" student - one that those of us who've been in "the business" for longer times could do worse than follow. He gives clear instructions in the Lesser Pentagram and Hexagram rituals, the Star Ruby, and the preliminary practices of asana, pranayama, and meditation. He discusses the simplest approaches to building the elemental weapons and temple equipment for the new magician, and has designed a simpe but profound rite of self-dedication which I will be trying out myself soon. Throughout the work, he speaks of the importance of the magical diary, and makes numerous recommendations as to how it should be kept, and why this is important. In six months, we have gone from zero to two (how appropriate, in Thelemic numerology) in the area of introductory works for the Thelemite, and my own initial reaction is that what Bro. Duquette's work may lack, Bro. Del Campo's book fulfills, and vice-versa. In the interests of full disclosure, I might mention that I have been looking forward to this book for some time (as have many oters) because of our fondness for the author. I was privileged to be initiated into the OTO by Gerald several years ago, and my enjoyment of New Aeon Magick was certainly enhanced by a certain vicarious pride in his achievement, in the light of our earlier association. However, this was simply seasoning for the mental meal provided by the book, and it received equally favorable responses from other kinfolk in the OTO who have never met the author, so it seems to me that it stands up very well on its own merits.
