UpdReq Mistress M. - (Still Paul answering, just under a handle I use on this board)... OTO = Ordo Templi Orientis (Order of the Temple of the East). A quasi- masonic fraternity founded around the turn of the century, and reconstituted under the leadership of Aleister Crowley in the 1920's. The Order is dedicated to the principles of The Book of the Law, and the philosophy of Thelema, which is based on that Book. While there are some intersections between the philosophies of OTO and ToS, they are different approaches to the Universe (possibly with similar goals, in some ways - that's a debate that could consume vast quantities of time and even greater quantities of beer). Questions about Thelema or the OTO would best be continued on the Thelema echo (if your sysop gets it) or one of the generic magick echoes (Magicknet or Magick3)), lest I impose further upon the kindess of our hosts here on Set. 93. UpdReq "NEW YORK (AP) 3/2/94: Federal agents toyed with the idea of using a Russian 'mind control' device to try and influence David Koresh during the standoff at the Branch Davidian compound, the _Village Voice_ reported. "In its March 8 editions, the weekly newspaper quotes Steven Killion, deputy chief of the FBI's technical services division, as saying he considered trying to control Koresh's actions with 'subliminal' messages as they negotiated by telephone. Killion dropped the idea after the makers of the device said it possibly could have the reverse effect of making Koresh more violent, the paper said. "Several weeks before Koresh and 78 followers died in a fire that destroyed their Waco, Texas compound, scientists from the Moscow Medical Academy demonstrated their device to U.S. intelligence, military and law enforcement officials at a Washington conference on futuristic weapons, the _Voice_ said. "During the meeting, Killion said he wanted to use the device on Koresh. 'In the normal course of your negotiation with the individual by telephone, you can impress a coded message. It is not realized consciously by the subject, but subconsciously, subliminally, they understand it,' Killion said. "The paper quoted Dr. Igor Smirnov, who demonstrated the device, as saying he had brought only 'entry level' equipment to show. After the FBI offered to have a working version brought to the United States, Smirnov conceded that it might not function as hoped, the paper said. "The _Voice_ did not say how the device was supposed to work. "The 51-day standoff began after four federal agents and six Davidians were killed as authorities tried to arrest Koresh on weapons charges. Eleven surviving Davidians were put on trial; all were acquitted Saturday of murder and murder conspiracy. Five were convicted of involuntary manslaughter and two of weapons charges." * * * * * This OO-EE-OO (as Ed Sanders might say) story from AP should cause concern to you less about what you hear on your telephone than about the gullibility and naivete of supposedly-sophisticated law- enforcement agencies in fringe-science areas. In cold, hard fact: While indeed you may *hear* messages below your conscious EMS auditory threshold or mere focus of attention, just *hearing* them [either consciously or subconsciously] in no way convinces you to obey them or change your mind because of them. The phenomenon may be likened to a commercial running on a television set in the background of your living room while you are concentrating on something else. At most this "background" message may cause you to think about its topic ["Yes, I do need to pick up some detergent at the supermarket."], but that's all. 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718
