I found I readily adapted to the Temples policies and protocol. It does demand a fair degree of discipline; those who can't cut it run out of time, aren't Recognized, or simply don't renew membership. If that chafes some people, the the Temple of Set was not the proper initatory vehice for them. No value judgement implied. Just an observation of fact! 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: rakshasa Area: Base of Set To: Mystic 21 Aug 92 23:35:00 Subject: Re: Is this the SET Echo? UpdReq Dear Mystic: Regarding your comments re: Wiccans/Satanists; I've noticed that myself. As a Setian (and a Thelemite before that), I got mroe negative responses from Wiccans than from Christians. At least the Christians were nice enough to save my soul...the Wiccans seemed to live in deadly fear of my "bad vibes" and thought I should be "quarantined" lest I infect them with some sort of spiritual disease. Personally, I like some of what I see in Wicca; but most of it seems to me to be hippie-fantasy-unicorn-crystal polishing crap. (Of course, there's lots of heavy metal-pentagram wearing-I am the child of Death-makeup wearing crap in the Satanist community too--nobody is immune to the siren song of shit, it seems). Unfortunately, I think many Wiccans want the benefits of Christianity (that is, that good feeling that there's Someone Out There looking out for them) without the Rules which Christians have to follow. As a result, they've created an eviscerated Christianity which lacks even the shreds of logic which the original religion had and which serves only to give granola-chompers an excuse to run about naked through the woods. Of course, this is a strong statement--I'm hoping to encourage discussion and even some good Old Fashioned Yelling and Screaming. Any Wiccan who wishes to show me where I'm wrong is welcome to do so. First I suggest they read a book called _A Razor For A Goat_ (available in larger university libraries) which pretty conclusively debunks the Margaret Murray theories. Then I suggest they get their hands on some of Stephen Flowers' work and some of the stuff the Odinists are doing to see how you go about trying to recreate a genuine Olde Religion... If I pissed you off...just doing my job. (I noticed this myself from the beginning of my membership). I have not, however, encountered any "militaristic" feel. The Temple has a very loose and non-hierarcheal structure--this at least as I have encountered it. There are two people in the T. of S. recognized as Ipsissimi (sp)--I have been working with one of them on a regular basis and he has yet to treat me as an inferior. In fact, he has been most helpful and supportive. The Temple is not about hierarchies and rules--it is about individuals growing. The "military" flavor is there, no doubt; Satanists in general will tend to be, I think, a very disciplined bunch who are interested in things like the military. Quite a few of my Satanist (non-Setian) friends are members of the armed services. 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Lewis Cypher Area: Base of Set To: Charles Nemo 21 Aug 92 08:48:40 Subject: RE: The moderator speaks... I hardly see what import homosexuality has on this particular echo, myself. This is the ToS echo, for discussion of things Setian in nature. I must say I do find most of the participants to be very interesting... almost makes me want to join the ToS... but being the avowed atheist I am, I could never reconcile the decision. Needless to say, it does serve as an interesting source of info for my curiosities of the 'dark side'. _ _ / witch, gets bad reactions from a lot of quarters.
