I would date BBSing as we recognize the FE> term to around 1980. Hmmm...Not sure on that date. Perhaps late 70's or early 80's. The first bbs was supposed to have been started by Ward Christiansen in Chicago. It was operated just between friends, and a local user group. Ward wrote the RCPM software for it, and also at the same time that he *invented and wrote* XMODEM and MODEM7. Some years later, after bbses had become more popular, some Sysops in Dallas developed echomail and netmail, again initially for their personal use. And the whole thing has been snowballing ever since. //Phil// 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Grendel Area: RPSTOVAL To: Phil Hansford 2 Sep 92 17:14:00 Subject: BBS Freedom of Speech UpdReq > When bbses began 25 or so years ago, they operated just between friends. > There was no need to validate a new user, because you already knew > him personally. 25 years ago? The first BBS was in about 1978 and was run by the same guy that wrote the Xmodem protocol.
