Obviously your explanation that Crowley "was reporting what he saw" is incorrect. 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Serpens Area: RPSTOVAL To: Tim Maroney 30 Apr 92 19:30:04 Subject: Re: RE: RE: RE: RE: THELEMA WITHOUT CHRIS Tim - Geez, Reader's Encyclopedia didn't have a reference to Arlecchino? My innocent trust in that invaluable work has suffered a major jolt. That's the original Italian for the commedia character better known as Harlequin. However, Harlequin carries with it that Baroque/Rococo image of the elegant trickster in becoming harlequinade and elegant domino. The original of the character is a rube frm Bergamo, whose mask traditionally includes a deforming wen under the left eye, dressed in ill-fitting rags, producing numerous props from the bulging puch worn at his groin, and whose folly misfires far more often than his cunning plots ever get him fed/laid/rich/etc. Arlecchino: Wise man! How shall I profit from folly and turn it into wisdom? Leandro: Do as these good people have done (gesturing at audience). Take comfort in seeing a folly greater than your own. Go to the commedia, and laugh at Arlecchino. Arlecchino: But wise man! I *am* Arlecchino, and I've laughed at him until I've cried. Thank you for your council wise man. Do you take a fee? (From Goldoni's scripted adaptation of various commedia scenarioes, The Three Cuckolds) On the other...if I hit CTL-C about halfway through each of the posts on the various OTO and Thelema echoes, I can probably approximate the parataxic distortion factor you describe (and its covered under my basic PC Pursuit costs). I stole the line about "doing dishes" from Spider Robinson in teh first place (Stardance, to be precise). My own feeling on organizations with a real or imagined hierarchy is modelled on the social conventions of the SCA at its best. I met the gent who was King of the East when I first joined cleaning out a stopped up toilet before a feast. You could usually sink a battleship under the weight of tin hats, spurs, belts chains, laurels, etc. involved in mopping, washing, polishing, etc. after a tyical feast (when the system is working properly). It is important for the officers in ritual - magical ritual or social ritual - to wield the prestige of office, whether it is sitting at High Table being deferred to, or sitting in the East, doing their magical thing. My fondness for Zen however suggests a useful balance is achievefd by chopping wod and drawing water in connection with these other aspects of the job.
