From: Jeff Trowbridge Area: Public Key Encryption To: All 19 Apr 95 16:48:28 Subject: keyring problems UpdReq -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hi All, I'm having a problem viewing the contents of my keyring. It's gotten so big it whizzes by and I can only see the last 8 or 9 names. I looked in the manual and couldn't find any way to either limit the keyring to one screen at a time or to print the contents of the keyring so I'd have a hard copy to reference. Any pointers? I read all the stuff about sending/rec PGP msg's, but CF> I don't know what channels are used. Ie, Netmail, Internet E-mail, CF> Private mail on a BBS, etc. There are two basic uses for PGP. The first is message/file encryption, which keeps the information private and insures authenticity. The second is "signing", which insures the authenticity of a message/file. Many system don't allow encrypted messages because the sysops are afraid that the messages might be for illegal activities. The laws on sysop responsibilities are somewhat hazy, and they don't want to take any chances. At any rate, encrypted messages don't belong in any public echo or newsgroup, but should be restricted to private mail. Internet mail is OK. Fidonet mail is (in general) only OK if messages are sent direct to the destination and are not routed. IMHO, if the message is important enough that you are encrypting it, you would also want the guarantee of delivery only available with direct mail. While it is obvious that one would use encryption in strictly private messages, it's not immediately obvious that it makes sense in all personal messages. Read the PGP docs for enlightenment. Signing a message is no more harmful than a multi-line tagline. Many echoes don't allow signing because of the overhead. They should be fine in any private message, however there are still some sysops that think signatures might contain secret messages and don't allow them! Signing is a good thing -- it's basically a message feature that went away when we went from handwritten mail to email. It's only natural to get it back! There is a third use, and that is encrypting ones own files. CF> I've never found an echo strictly for PGP msg's. No reason for one. PGP is a tool, not an end in itself. Using PGP is not a game.
