"Long-life" bulbs work better, and the bulb AL>companies can charge a hell of a lot more for them. Not the same technology. Usually, a 'long-life' just has a thicker filament, thus less light/watt but longer life. Then there are the sodium bulbs.... FM> If the extenders didn't work, I think they would still be available. FM> The fact that they aren't makes me wonder... They are available, I see them from time to time. It's the hassle of using them that gets people, the savings for light bulb current is usually too low to get most people exited enough to put out more up front. Most people don't seem to have been taught the time-value of money, a fact which is routinely used to sell shoddy goods. The company "Real Goods" which has an 800 number (call 8005551212 & ask 'em for the number.) I think carries them, & will certainly know about them.
