I'm not sure, myself, but I find my familiar (a bird) always wanting to be 
in whatever I am doing. Casting a spell, reading tarot, making incense 
etc... the little fellow HAS to be a part of it.
My cat on the other hand, (more my SO's familiar then mine) just likes to 
be near the tarot.  She has no interest in anything else.
Who knows? Maybe during spellwork the cat sits and thinks "Been 
there... done that..." and/or just watches and makes sure nothing 
happens to us while we are in trance?

I understand about the comments regarding your bird familiar wanting to be in 
on everything.  I used to have a Budgie named Spike who would get so involved 
in everything that it was difficult to concentrate when he'd rip at the pages 
in my books and run around on my shoulder screeching happily.  He was a 
treasure.
Salem-cat likes to LAY ON my tarot readings, and anything else I read.  I 
guess she likes the attention.
My qustion relates to the inference I've seen in films and in books that 
witches send their familiars out to do some magick of their own or help the 
spell caster do his thing some how by being part of the ritual.
Have you encountered the same thing?  Or what?
And when these cherished familiars go to the great Beyond, what ritual do we 
perform to send them off "rightly"?  and with dignity?
I'm really pecking at you, aren't I Flax Trickster....Thanks for the comments! 
 And your enlightening ideas.
