I just spent a wonderful week in Philadelphia visiting my family. Sorry I didn't get a chance to call you but I was thoroughly involved with family most of the time. It was a beautiful trip. So, how are things? How's the Camp? Today I witnessed the marriage of Vere and Michelle. It was beautiful and heartwarming to see two Thelemites enter into such intimate communion. Wish you could have been here. Call you soon, Fra. Area: MagickNet To: Crat 20 Sep 92 21:22:00 Subject: Alchemy UpdReq The enochian keys are not exactly an Ariadne thread leading us from the labyrinth. More likely than not, they will give us access to the beast within. But to the best of my knowledge, they are not instruction manuals that will facilitate enlightenment. I suspect that power and knowledge aren't enough. If working with the elemental permutations confers more love, wisdom, and balance, then things are well. But too often, power is expropriated by the ego, and dthings don't work out so well. My concern isn't with compassionate, wise and intellectually honest people experimenting with occult force. My concern is that, generally speaking, occultism is a minefield populated by persons who tend to be dishonest, intellectually and emotionally. I am not holding myself out as a paragon of virtue. But I've seen enough to have concluded that very, very, very few occultists--regardless of their "school--have the slighrest notion as to what Initiation is all about. No one locked up the directions to the "nuclear reactor." The only way "through" that I know of is visa vis the initiatory process. That means contact with another being (I'm partial to humans) and initiation/attunement to the "mandala" that this being is an exponent of. The cabalistic "mandala," such that it is, is in my opinion as different from, say, the Buddhist mandala as Blake's poetic vision is from that of the Dali Lama. One is of Eden. The other has abolished Eden. Neither is right, neither is wrong. But few occultists on the Western trip have ever re-entered Eden. One thing that astonishes me is that one can read a hundred--a thousand books--on Western magical themes and you hardly ever see a description of how the subject's world looks. Do colors appear brighter? Are sounds more transparent? How does time "feel?" How do trees look? How does matter look? Etc. There gobs and gobs and gobs of crap on correspondences and pathworking/ritual, but the altered state of the subject's consciousness is a totally ignored topic. Not so with certain outstanding mystics. But for some reason, occultists often get caught up in dtrying to acquire power and knowledge. They imagine that by learning the "right" keys or the "right" words of power, they can somehow open the Door from the inside. But they can't. For those to whom the Door has already opened (ultimately, an act of Grace), the keys of enoch can be great fun. But if the Door hasn't opened, my guess is that such experimentation is likely to lead deeper into the hall of mirrors, deeper into the dense darkness of the labyrinth. 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718
