UpdReq Airmid is doing Donegal, which is what I do, since I learned it from Deirdre of Maidenhill-- she has four dialects, but Donegal is her primary. It is closer to Scots than the others, is notable for the slender d pronounced as j, and a w sound where some other dialects have a v. For example, an raibh tu becomes ahn row too, not ann rev tuh. There are also some differences, though minor, in the patterns of aspiration and eclipsis, particularly after prepositions and possessives. Where is your teacher from? Of course the correspondences are there. And more than one Tarot deck uses "Cauldrons" as Cups. But that doesn't mean it was their original function. Another thing to note is that of the Four Treasures, the Stone was only for the use of the High King of Ireland -- it didn't do anything at all for anyone else. The Sword and Spear were exclusively for the use of the Gods. No tale shows any mortal using either of these tools. The Cauldron was the only one that could be used by anyone, and then only under some circumstances. Not like magickal tools, which can be used by anyone who has training to know how. At this point we are looking at the possibility of affiliating with a regionally accredited, flexible adult degree program in the human services. Why? Because there is no point in offering degrees which have no academic standing, and having written self-study, five-year plan and accredidation reports for colleges I worked at, I can assure you that unless we can come up with several million dollars for library and facility AND the ongoing funds to hire fully qualified faculty, we cannot get accreditation. Period. The regional agencies have been pulling accreditation from small minority and religous schools left and right for lack of adequate program funds, library, and support services. Now, we could certainly offer our own degrees -- Bachelor's in Theology, Master's in Divinity-- etc-- in a state like Washington where we could apply for the religious exemption, but the degree would be worthless for employment purposes, graduate school admission, etc. And that seems like fraud to me-- why call it a degree if it doesn't function as a degree for the holder? Isaac Bonewits has a fully accredited BA in Magic from Berkeley. He lists on his resume, BA, Berkeley, and the year and hopes they won't bother asking what it is in. If we are applying as military chaplains, etc we'd better have an accredited degree; likewise for states which license pastoral counselors, etc. The debate about paid clergy has been raging in Earthspirit news, in Druid's Progress, in Green Egg, in Fireheart. We aren't going to resolve it in the near future. I'm particularly curious as to why a deck would suddenly start 'working' (and very well too) for someone who's never been particularly involved in such matters. I've also been advised that I should 'invoke protection' before working with them again; sounds like a good idea if I knew what was meant. Any suggestions? ---------------------------------------------------------------- There's a whole, entire echo devoted to tarot, called, logically enough, Tarot. Ellen Reed, who also pokes her head into this echo, moderates it. But since my sysop hasn't gotten it for me (or anyone else on this system) yet, I'm going to send you a reply here. I've been reading cards for over 20 years. In my opinion, they are a focus for your intuition. Nothing else. They are pieces of pasteboard, and if your intuition could focus on fingernail clippings, they would do just as well in obtaining a reading. I teach my students first to focus on the cards, then learn to read without them. That's a challenge, but if you let yourself trust your intuition, it's not as hard as it sounds. Nor do I invoke protection when I read. People do have, however, their different rituals that they do when they read. I usually light a candle. If I remember. I usually clean my crown chakra. But I don't invoke a particular deity, nor do fussy things with my cards. The deck I teach from is 20 years old (the Albano-Waite), the box is long gone. Once when I taught a tarot card class, there were two women who treated their cards the way you'll read the cards were supposed to be treated: i.e., they had them wrapped in silk, put in order, and kept in a pine box. I came into class talking a mile a minute and threw my deck on the table wrapped in two rubber bands. You should have seen the expressions on the faces of the class! My point in this is that the magic is always and ever, in the person, not in the tools. By all means, if it helps you to be clearer in your readings, wrap the cards, do the invocations, light the candles, or whatever. But realize the cards are just props, ready to speak to you when your intuition is ready to hear. Erin 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718
