People like Randi and CISOP have claimed the word sceptic (skeptic in US) and have redefined it to mean "disbelief in ...." therefore Merlin means he doesn't believe in ..... but he's willing to be persuaded if there is sufficient evidence. In the good old days when words weren't raped by vested interests he would have simply been able to say "I'm very skeptical" = "I have a very open mind". 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Mandy Vivian Area: MagickNet To: Lord Aslan 8 Jun 92 10:15:00 Subject: Re: EVIL, Maybe not??? One more point (Ugh) on modern Paulism. My sister is a Born-Again Charismatic, of the jesus-freak (self termed) variety, so I don't know how representative of current "accepted" Xtian thought she is, but we've had many, many discussions regarding various points of Xtianity, and Hell most of all. Her concept, and one most of the people that she has introduced me to share, is that Hell is simply the complete and total absence of "God" from one. It runs like this: On Earth, God is within us, always (in the form of the Holy Ghost, I believe, but she hasn't specified that). What we feel when we do good is "God" within us acting through us, and the guilt we feel when we "sin" is caused by "God" turning away, but not fully departing, from us at that point. If "God" were to totally remove "his presence" from us, we would be in an eternal Hell not of outside stimuli, such as fire and brimstone, that one could grow accustomed to, but a total loss of the Divine within, thus the "Fire that burns but does not consume", the pain unabated and eternal of a spiritual nature. I DON'T think that's from Dante. UpdReq I myself, have no problem with christianity eventhough I have had some minor problems with a few fundamentalist sects because of my religion. When I was in the military, I had a visit from a group of Jehovah's Witness, I told them right at the first that I was pagan. Well, I guess I got blacklisted, that week I got reported to the welfare dept for child abuse and neglect and my squadron commander had a command directed evalution done on me AND put me in Drug/Alcohol Rehab. My unit commander could not believe it(I didn't even drink at squadron picnics when beer was available). A six-pack of beer lasts me a month. Come to find out, my squadron commander was a member of that particular church and the people told him all about me, how I was a SATANNIST, endangering the welfare of my children, etc. Nothing is further from the truth, within the month, all charges and harassment was dropped and my squadron commander was up on charges of Harrassment, Discrimination and Conduct unbecoming an Officer(he was having an affair with a married NCO). That was the most prominent problem that I've I had with christians but there were others. I enjoy talking with christians and even having philosophical discussions, as long as they reserve the right for me to have my opinion and I believe they should have the right to theirs. I believe that no man is better than another, everyone is equal and there should be NO prejudice or bigotry in anything. Prejudice is STUPID and I don't like it in anyone, be they christian, jew, hindu, pagan or whatever. My mother is christian and she understands why I believe the way I do, although she DOES try to get me to go to her church ever now and then. Sometimes I go, sometimes I don't. I hope that this clarifies my stand about christians and prejudice, take care and Blessed Be. Lord Aslan P.S. I have the entire C.S.
