Ptolemy's not bad on the philosophical side -- he condenses a lot of 
stuff from earlier societies, esp. the late Babylonian & Sumerian. But 
he is now known to have fudged his observations to make some of his 
astrological calculations come out the way he wanted, which makes him a 
total fraud in some people's eyes.
I was surprised at the amount of astrological stuff I found in the 
writings of the False Hermes Trismegistus (circa 100 a.d.). There were 
even some indications that his "tradition" used an astrology-based self- 
exploration system similar to the one I developed.
