(From the SF Chronicle, 5/14/88) London (Reuters) -- Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the witches of the world--they could not find a new king. After meeting in a secret location somewhere in Britain, the mysterious Witches Council yesterday decided against naming a successor to High Priest Verbias, also known as Alex Sanders, who died last week after a 25 year reign. "After due consideration, a unanimous motion was carried that there is no need for a king of the witches," High Priest Nigel Bourne said. "This is fortunate, as there is no one properly prepared for the role." Modern-day witches say they want to sweep away their old image of broomsticks and toad potions. They now summon what they believe to be their magical powers to help charities. They hold weekly circles in which the perform naked rituals that celebrate fertility and nature. Bourne said it is unlikely that witches would soon make another attempt to find a new leader. "It's considered the craft is capable of looking after itself," he said. ##30##
