I saw an article recently rating the failure rates of various condoms... they ranged from less than 1% to, I belive, about 15-20% in lab tests (which put them under far greater strain than you are likely to in any form of intercourse, unless you happen to ejaculate like a firehose. In any event, a failure rate "of at least 16%" would quickly lead to your condom company being shut down. DB> Due respect? To whom or what? The CDC, AMA, WHO, et al? Abstinence is of course 100% proof against AIDS... but it carries problems of its own with it, not the least of which is psychoses related to sexual repression (read the _Malleus Maleficarium_ and the journals of St. Anthony the Hermit for more on that). Through the use of condoms and common sense, one can minimize the risk of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases substantially. "Common sense" is the key word here, of course. Condoms are certainly not a panacea which will solve the problems of sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, overpopulation, and the sad state of the San Diego Padres. Caution in choosing one's sexual partners is essential... so is caution in avoiding other high-risk activities (rimming, fisting, watersports, etc.) and in avoiding exchange of bodily fluids. With that said, though, let me add that, IMHO, a person who practices "safer sex" religiously is far more likely to die in a car accident or plane crash than from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Rakshasa Area: Base of Set To: Deep Black 17 Aug 93 23:08:00 Subject: Re: Free Love UpdReq DB> The threads in which you have participated on this echo seem to DB> suggest DB> that when it comes to the ideas you so emotionally expound on, you DB> have DB> little or no background. It What I suspect happened here was that: 1) MPWG decided "virginity is a good thing." (This is not, in and of itself, a bad conclusion. Without question abstinence is the only 100% protection against STDs and pregnancy... and there are certainly many people who become sexually active before they are emotionally ready to do so). 2) He then saw a quote in a book (a quote which I recognized, hence my remark about the Diggers) which seemed to back up his idea that "Free love" (a term which he uses to cover everything other than sex before marriage) was in fact rape. He waved this quote around to say "See, look at this. This proves I am right." 3) Unfortunately for MPWG, there were others on this echo who had read the book and who knew something about the Sixties and Free Love in general. When we questioned his sources, it turned out that he was taking one quote wholly out of context and using it to justify his own theory. It's bad form to quote something before you've read it... especially when you quite obviously don't understand it. It would be akin to me quoting a "mathematical proof" of God's existence from a book on multidimensional calculus... and being shown as an idiot when Oz Tech asked me some questions about it, only to find that I had no idea what it meant.
