Indeed... I've noted that "the 60s" have become for most a symbol. For the Deadheads and wannabe Hippies the 60s are a utopian time when everybody smoked dope, listened to bitchin' music, and ran around naked. (Of course, nobody realizes that the hippies and radicals were always a minority; most American students in the 60s were wearing crewcuts and beehives, drinking beer, and pledging fraternities and sororities just like they do today) For the conservatives, the 60s are a time when the very fabric of American society was nearly rent asunder by "anti-American" elements (I personally consider Abbie Hoffman a patriot and great American on a par with Eugene Victor Debs and Emma Goldman; we need gadflies). Both of them are, of course, wrong... and also right. I suppose there's a lesson to be learned here, but I'll be damned if I know what it is. (Aug. 11) UPI - A woman who was shot and critically injured by a gunman who burst into a McDonald's restaurant and opened fire died Wednesday of her injuries. The gunman killed a 50-year-old man, wounded a 19-year-old man in the hand and shot Sandy Kenaga, 42, Kenosha, in the back. She died Wednesday at Kenosha Memorial Hospital. Kenosha police spokeswoman Reesie Moeller said the gunman entered the restaurant about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday and started screaming at people to get out. He then opened fire without giving the dozen or so people inside a chance to leave. Investigators found a videotape in the man's car. On it he makes references to infamous killers like Jeffrey Dahmer, convicted last year of killing more than a dozen young men, and alludes to the execution of seven people at a suburban Chicago fast food restaurant earlier this year. Lt. Steve Pataska said Terres rambled on the tape and gave the impression "they he's going to take his life. He says he can't take it anymore." Police said late Wednesday Terres apparently mailed a letter to the manager of a McDonald's in Illinois. The missive was intercepted by the U.S. Postal Service. Police said it provides additional evidence of Terres' state of mind. The letter was mailed from Kenosha the same day Terres made the tape. Two teenage girls who say they knew Terres described him as a loner, a drug dealer and a Satan worshipper. Kimberly Sinkler, 16, a freshman at Reuther Central High School in Kenosha said she dated Terres. She said he recently called her and invited her to go horseback riding saying, "This may be the last time you see me." The girl said he told her if she ever broke up with him he'd kill himself. "I didn't take it as anything serious," she said. Terres was a former resident of Arlington Heights, Ill., and moved to Kenosha earlier this year. Police said they found a Colt AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle on the ground next to his car. His keys and ammunition for the gun were locked inside. ...
