I was only discussing in context of latter-day, not roots. I agree with what you say, but it doesn't, in my eyes, obviate the need to root out parts of the judeo-xtian structure (the shape of faith, imho, has repercussions). I'm not knocking them in the context of their roots, I understand the danger and isolation they existed in. All I'm saying is that I think that mindset needs to be broken a bit these days so that magick can be unshackled. Hmm, could this be the start of 'seculr magick'? 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Jonathan Corwin Area: Night Side To: * 9 Aug 92 15:43:34 Subject: Nox Theoria, In Defense of the Black ArtsSent UpdReq De(con)struction The white magi restrict themselves to the act of construction, whether in attempt to heal another or to evoke into existence a cure for some disease or condition of life. The black magus is not restricted to this mode of action but ought to be familiar with it. The black magus understands that the act of creation inherently involves destruction. This act of destruction, however, is carefully specified and not randomly senseless; it is a carefully chosen act. Those "laws" to which the white magi adhere in superstition do not hold for the black magi, nor for the true magus, in any meaningful way. An examination of these beliefs quickly reveal significant lapses of logic, collapsing the exploration of the artistic reaches of the human spirit to an ever-restricting phobia which has more in common with the Judeo-Christian tradition of magick and supernatural worship than the visionary adventures of the psychonaut. First, let us take the proposition that creation always involves destruction. Selective destruction, true, but destruction, nonetheless. The recognition of this act impels the magus to realize that not all life is equal, animal lovers and earth preservationists to the contrary. Life, therefor, can be judged in relation to humanity's needs (and that of the magus'), having differing value. Christianity, that religion of the rabble, finds its ultimate comfort in the extension of the value of life to a bland totalitarian egalitarianism where the state becomes family and every cause is a worthy cause. Its missionary zeal is only overtaken by its shadowy intrigues and monumental insecurity in praise of itself. This insecurity wreaks havoc on the consciousness, trivializing it and brutally bullying it about, alienating the very people it claims to help. The sense of body is lacking, God is only half the message. And the Devil is so much more fun, that rakish libertine. Consciousness is the interface of body and mind; to ignore the one is to diminish the other. Let us turn now to the so-called "three-fold law" adopted from the East along with "karmic balance". Hell, let's throw in the life-is-a-neverending-cycle(circle)-of-life concept which many Eastern philosophies and religious sects seem so fond of, as well. The three-fold law supposes that all good and evil return unto the caster (creator) three times over. If life truly followed this paradigm, the feedback effects would be atrocious. It only makes sense if the universe is presided over by a bungling bureaucracy of the Galactic Illuminoids (and if it is, should we not then rebel at their senselessness?) Then, at least, the extra cosmic budget-deficit could be stuck "off budget". The reasonably inquisitive (my apologies to the christians for the plagiarizing of their invention) magus readily sees the inherent insensibility in this moral metaphysics; its purpose is to keep the masses in check. But suppose the three-fold principle exists in the context of an open system, might we not vote it back to its status as "law"? Typical christian hayseed thinking. Magick has a long christian heritage, explaining its spiritual schizophrenia. The typical christian concept of earth as battleground surrounded by God's ineffable abundance is the spiritual equivalent of "the grass is always greener on the other side of the septic tank". Perhaps, if they wish hard enough, they'll be lucky on the way to the bank. And if they really wish hard enough, maybe they'll have the good fortune to rob the bank itself. But the open system concept poses one particular difficulty: if true, the "laws" which guide us seem more likely to be the invention of mischievous, meddling energy-entities a la Disneyland of the Gods ("and then I made the statue bleed, simple trick,really... you shoulda seen 'em, humans are so much fun to mess with...") and the circle(cycle)-of-life concept still remains invalidated, of course. The notion that the three-fold principle causes karmic balance is preposterous, yet the magus will readily grasp the seed of truth it encapsulates: The individual is a part of the system, and her actions reflect back onto her. Yet to say this takes on a humanly-mandated moral form valid except when prohibited by necessity or divine intervention is not only the height of contemptuous ignorance, it is outrageous! In only the way humans can be. Therefore, the magus will keep in mind that (s)he continuously evokes reactions, and will explore those links, but not fall for the moral stupidities otherwise. We have seen that the pact of creation involves selective destruction. Destruction and creation, therefore, are two sides of the same coin -- a false duality. By examining the laws of the physical universe, the usefulness of this duality for the sake of a model may be made clear. Pull an electron from the orbit of an isolated atom and it eventually pops back into place, assuming the co-dependant atom does not find another partner to dance with in the meantime. Similarly, de(con)struction defines a type of ritual working in which the goal is to shift our dualist frameworks, mastering them for our purposes: the dualities inherent in our mental framework, and thus reflected in our physical actions, strike a psychic equilibrium of sorts and must be manipulated and catalyzed in order to change; a positive potential (defined only as a desired outcome) must be waiting to fill the gap left by the destruction or banishment of habit or other force, else the goal is defeated by the natural order of attraction. Rituals of de(con)struction, then, ought to be designed with this sort of behavioral engineering in mind. It falls into three parts: a rite of construction, a rite of destruction, and an anchoring/closing of the ritual. This, along with any traditional banishments and preparations for the ritual openings the mage may desire. This process should be intuitively obvious -- those who grasp the principles of change are more successful than those who run the gauntlet blind. Dieters who understand dietary principles and change the patterns and content of their eating are more successful in losing weight the right way, and in keeping it off, than those who follow rigidly prescribed weight-loss plans and have no capacity for independent judgment. They are even more successful when they manage to anchor that behavior properly. Likewise, a rite of construction should precede a rite of destruction, setting the backstage and awaiting its moment of glory. Else, the vacuum left by the banishment of habit or other force will inevitably be filled... and perhaps by something undesirable. Finally, an anchor ought to be brought into play, preferably something that links the newly desired context of experience to the individual through a strong intermediary mechanism -- whether of forbidden nature or strongly based in the individual (of these two,the former might involve a surrender of some type and the latter a strong initial linking to a regularly engaged in activity, eg, the desired habit could be associated with running if the focus runs often) De(con)struction is essentially similar to A.O. Spare's work in that it utilizes a temporary immersion in dualities to achieve these desired goals. The journey of the magus is as much about the destruction of false concepts as it is of the construction and understanding of true ones. But there are degrees of falsehood and truth, which all stand relative to the desired goals of the magus. Man is a master fabricator, and it may prove that false notions are more valid than true ones in the pursuit of a particular goal. The transcendence of the condition of duality and transcendence itself (yet another false duality), may, perhaps, be occasionally glimpsed. This is sweet nectar indeed, yet vanishes as if proffered through a feat of prestidigitation. The glimpse of the rare is what impels the magus 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Jonathan Corwin Area: Night Side To: * 9 Aug 92 15:49:46 Subject: De(con)struction continued Sent UpdReq [...impels the magus] into this strange jungle of flora and fauna -- for the common, by default, is worthless. 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Jonathan Corwin Area: Night Side To: * 9 Aug 92 16:07:04 Subject: Nox Theoria, In Defense of the Black ArtsSent UpdReq The Projected Other The religious and moralists soil their dainty gloves, society's debutantes (delinquent).
