NRRYS Date: 06-18-92 (18:30) From: PETER LEVENDA To: BILL EICHMAN Subj: NECRONOMICON Conf: Magick {RIMENET} ___------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have Simon's reply. It is characteristically long-winded so will probably have to spread over a few message units. Pls bear with me. Simon replies: Dear Mr. Eichman: This is in reply to ur inquiry re Necronomicon. It seems Mr. Levenda has rushed once again to the defence of the book, going where demons fear to tread. I admire his persistence. My background with this book is purely accidental, as has been recounted in various places. My first occult reading was devoted to Waite's Book of Ceremonial Magic and Spence's Encylopedia of Occultism, followed by Lao Ze and Crowley. I did not read occult fiction so was unaware of the existence of H.P. Lovecraft. Later, as an Orthodox monk, I lead a rather sheltered existence. I found occult fiction tedious and, for the most part, still do. It is never as good as the actual experience: rather like reading a cookbook to stave off starvation. So it is with some amusement that I am frequently called upon to defend either Lovecraft's honor, or the honor of the Necronomicon vis a vis Lovecraft. It means little to me if the Necro. is or is not the very volume referenced by HPL. Although I find the correspondences between the work of HPL and several citations in the Necro. quite suggestive, I have no emotional stake in the matter. In my view, the number of people who have used this system in one way or another seems far in excess of the faithful readership that HPL enjoys these days. However, I realize that there are those for whom the authenticity of the Necro. vis a vis HPL is an issue of consuming importance, and I can respect those feelings even if I don't agree with -- or understand -- the philosophy behind them. You must remember the difficulties surrounding the manuscruipt's provenance. One day, perhaps, when there is absolutely no danger either to myself or to those faithful friends who worked with me on the translation, facsimile copies of the ms. will be made available. Until that time, however, I cannot honor any such requests and state for the record that such facsimile copies are not in my possession. As for other remarks and questions of both yourself and a Mr. Sansing: That the book is pagan goes without saying. My introduction -- with its attendant tables and associated material -- naturally attempts to place the book within a Thelemic and Qabalistic framework, but then I could do that with the Gardnerian Book of Shadows as I'm sure you would all agree. That doesn't make the Gardnerians a bunch of crypto Judeao-Christians. The actual text of the Necro. itself is obviously pagan. There is no mention of Yahweh, Jesus, Muhammed or any other member of the Cult of the Pretender. I feel no particular need to ingratiate myself with Pagans or any other social or religious group, but I feel that the book's pagan nature should be accurately represented. If the general Pagan populace despises the Necro. -- as I am sure many individual members do -- that is, of course, their prerogative. I wish them peace. It is most manifestly a grimoire, a grammar of ceremonial magic. The various stages of self-initiation, the central creation and transformation myths, the incantations, ritual specifications, etc. are all hallmarks of the grimoire literature. I believe that the chants were preserved oraly by the Assyrians after the fall of the Sumerian empire: indeed, all historical evidence points to this. Sumerian became to the Assyrians what Latin was fr the Western Church and Church Slavonic for my former employers: a purely ritual language of some power. The ms. itself was a Greek translation of an Arabic original. Naturally, the Sumerian language portions were transliterated into Greek script. Some of the individual terms -- such as Azag-thoth, for example -- were clearly hybrid words indicative of some neo-Platonist type syncretism, and hint of Coptic borrowings. the words were retained without much understanding of their meaning, only preserved by magicians in the same way "barbarous tongues" were preserved by magicians through the ages. Lovecraft's secondary appelation for the tome -- Al Azif -- so roundly criticized by many so-called Arabic language experts as a non-existent term, does have a basis in antiquity, for we find -- in Smith's lectures on the Religion of the Semites, 1927 edition -- a citatioby Stanley A. Cooke (the Biblical scholar) that reads: "W.R.S. compares the Arabic 'azif, the eerie sound of the jinn." (he's referring to another work by Smith that was published at the end of the century.) That would make Al Azif read, in English, something like The Wail of the Demon, an entirely appropriate title for the Necronomicon. As for its efficacy as a grimoire, that depends -- as always -- on the magician. It is certainly as valuable as any Key of Solomon, more so in my estimation as the antiquity of the Sumerian language points to earlier, and deeper, layers of our collective unconscious. These gods had been invoked in secret for thousands of years by a tiny handful of persons. To those who protest that humans had not known of the existence of Sumeria until relatively recently, I respectfully direct their attention to the many cults that have existed for millenia in the deserts and hill towns of the Middle East, all unknown to Western eyes. It is a subtly racist attitude to assume that -- because Western-educated white male archaeologists from European and Ivy League universities had not known of the Sumerian language or religion until a century ago -- that no one else had. I believe some surviving members of the original witch cults may agree with me. To those who don't, I recommend a visit to the great Coptic cathedrals of Ethiopia where some of the most earth-shaking discoveries in the field of so-called Biblical archaeology are awaiting us, or to the caves of the Shaitan-worshipping Yezidi cult of Iraq: rites in the hands of living persons who obtained much secret knowledge from their ancestors. There were many book burnings in human history: in Asia, in Europe, in the Middle East, and even in America. The great library of Alexandria was destroyed, and so much historical information with it. The Christian church burned books of sorcery in Jerusalem -- the infamous auto da fe -- with gusto. When the writings were clearly so vulnerable, there were those who preserved manuscripts in secret -- away from the prying eyes and fiery brands of Church and State alike -- and there were those who memorized the essential literature and passed it down orally to initiates. To those who doubt the possibility of this technique, I suggest a study of the Yoruban Table of Ifa and of the priests of Ifa who memorize a set of complex numerical and ritual correspondences four times the size of the Chinese I Jing. Crowley himself has pointed out with incredulity the laziness of the modern humans who cannot memorize the rites, insisting that his followers be at least as capable as the Masons who memorize enormous quantities of prose for use in their rituals. I gather from my reading of the various messages on this subject in the SIG wherein Mr. Levenda lurks that your readership takes a dim view of Thelema. For the record, let me state that I am in accord wth the view of both Crowley and his rather explosive associate John Parsons that the gods of Sumer form the root of the New Age. As the first literate civilization on earth, a society that lived on the edge of pre-history, a culture that attributed its origins to the influence of the mysterious alien Oannes, I feel we must look to Sumer for the answers to today's most pressing eschatalogical questions. In my estimation the Necronomicon is the product of these various historical and cultural forces. Its popularity may instigate serious evaluations of the influence of Sumerian religion and magic on human society in the last eight thousand years. It may provide a necessary psychic link between ourselves and our potential for evolution, a passage through our most distant past (which means, our most dangerous unconscious processes), a journey begun in this century by men like Freud, Dali, Jung, Reich, Picasso, Joyce, Breton, Artaud, Nietzsche, Kafka, Duchamps and, yes, Crowley. History may prove or disprove the antiquity of the Necronomicon. Its utility, however, is beyond question.
