It motivates people to try harder. The problem is that there really isn't competition in Power. Each area has its own power company that is like a virtual monopoly. Competition would be good but I don't see it happening too soon. I would love to see them get fusion going but that is going to take more R&D and the power companies don't have that push to try to get it right. There are two things that are wrong with socialized Power* and Monopolies: They both just keep the status quo. Why try to find better energy sources when you don't have to? I think that something major is going to happen in nuclear power generation that is going to cost lives and lots of money. and when that happens one of two things will happen 1) We will abandon nuclear power or 2) We will get off our butts and try to make it safer. WR> You might not know that the Saturn 5 boosters could have been used for WR> a Mars mission. But we don't have anymore Saturns. Well we have one... but its in pieces on display at NASA, the problem is that we don't have the plans to make them anymore and to do something of that nature again would take a whole redesign. We should just purchase the plans of the Russian Booster (you know the big mongo one they have) for launching. The shuttle program isn't a bad program but it is being used for the wrong purpose. The shuttle should be used for taking payloads to completed orbital platforms, and used to take raw materials for the building of such platforms. The problem is that after 20 years of Cuts in budget NASA isn't going to give up on something like the shuttle that easily. To give up on it would mean that their budget would be slashed even more. As for Mars, we needed to be there 15 years ago, and could have if government would have pulled its head out of its ass. Heck we should be mining the asteroids and the moon by now, generating power in space and beaming it back to earth. Hell the next step is to approach Russia, the Ukraine, Japan, and the European Commonwealth and get an International Base in Space and then start a colonization Program. Oghma ...
