From: Albertus Magnus Area: Metaphysical To: All 11 Jan 94 21:28:22 Subject: The Year in Death: 1/4 UpdReq THE YEAR IN DEATH/1993 The world still hasn't found its limit for senseless carnage, and 1993 saw some truly ugly stuff: savage atrocities in Bosnia, self-destruction as a political weapon in Somalia, extremists in Ireland and Israel doing their damnedest to defeat any attempt to stop the violence in their respective homelands because those efforts will not lead to Heaven on Earth delivered yesterday. International terrorism made it to U.S. soil with the bombing of the World Trade Center, apparently by Islamic fundamentalists. Most of the mayhem here, however, tended to be on a smaller scale, though no more sensical. There were a dozen instances of husbands or boyfriends shooting their estranged lovers inside court houses, a lunatic slaughtered commuters on an LIRR train, a right-to-lifer shot an abortionist dead, a NYC teenager hired an acquaintance to shoot his pregnant 15-year-old girlfriend as an alternative to an abortion (or actually having the child), several more postal workers gunned down co-workers, and on and on. And lest we get the impression that only thugs and lunatics have been letting loose rivers of blood, we should remember the massacre in Waco by the Feds. We are not going to miss DAVID KORESH at all, but there were 50 other people in that compound, and summary execution isn't the way things are done in this country. Also last year, it was finally proven that President RONALD REAGAN was lying repeatedly when he denied repeatedly that U.S.-trained and U.S.-funded Salvadoran death squads -- er, ``freedom fighters'' -- wiped out a village of over 700 civilians in 1982. Last year, three separate studies (that we're aware of) determined that the availability of the means of suicide increases the likelihood that someone will kill themself: specificially, the mere presence of a firearm in a household is a strong contributing factor in suicide. These and other studies came to the startling conclusion that you're more likely to die if you're shot rather than being wounded in some other way. Does any of this mean we should try to reduce the number of guns out there? Heavens, no. Even measures designed to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and children could maybe possibly inconvenience a lawful gun owner or two. So maybe KRS-ONE does have the only realistic philosophy: make sure you have more powerful weaponry than the people who bug you, and if they persist, kill them. Reminds us of that upstate New York woman who shot and wounded a fireman when he broke down her door to put out a fire, or that Baton Rouge homeowner who killed a Japanese exchange student for ringing his doorbell. God save us from people protecting themselves. The Brady Bill passed, a long overdue gesture. So why dwell on death? It's true, what we do here at TWID is a smidge ghoulish. Death is frightening. But the death of a celebrity has a different resonance from the death of a person close to us. We live, if only a little bit, through celebrities. Most of us aren't likely to go into space, or regularly hit jumpers from 30 feet out, or write a novel that tells the rest of us something we don't know about ourselves, but how can we not feel a vicarious thrill when someone else does? It's indication that any human endeavor is achievable by any human, even us. And even if that isn't true, that's what vicariousness (vicariocity? vicariability?) is for. Not to mention imagination. We measure ourselves against public figures. Would we sell tons of cocaine to strangers to support our dirt-poor neighbors (and ourselves) on the proceeds, like PABLO ESCOBAR, or cover for a felonious president, as did BOB HALDEMAN? Would we be brave enough to make a bombing run over enemy territory knowing that capture or death was a near certainty, like JIMMY DOOLITTLE? Why do we identify with celebrities? Maybe it's because the celebrities we most cherish embody qualities that we most admire -- and sometimes even aspire to. Mourning their deaths is an act of recapitulating what is best in the human heart -- such as the simple dignity of HELEN HAYES, the mischievousness of GEORGE ``Spanky'' MCFARLAND, the elegance and charity of AUDREY HEPBURN, the inspired dreaming of FEDERICO FELLINI, the thrill of discovery -- that is to say, of life -- of LEWIS THOMAS, the uncompromising demand for justice of THURGOOD MARSHALL, the decency of ARTHUR ASHE, the exuberance of DIZZY GILLESPIE. We'll remember them all, and for very good reason. The list below is not comprehensive, but it's close. --``Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. And my advice to you is to have nothing whatever to do with it.'' -- Somerset Maugham 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718 From: Albertus Magnus Area: Metaphysical To: All 11 Jan 94 21:28:44 Subject: The Year in Death: 2/4 UpdReq ACTORS/PERFORMING ARTS: DON AMECHE (85).
