Fate has smiled and delivered me my very own Bufo Marinus Sea Toad! Two Rednecks found it along side of the road and said "that's the biggest damned toad I ever seen in my life!" Then they took it to a buddy of mine that runs a pet store who traded them a couple of six-packs for it. Now it's mine...uh, what the hell do you do with it? I read your earlier post about "milking" its glands, exactly how does one go about doing this particular little feat? He's a large beast, about 5 inches long, and four wide. Is this like Clawed Toads (i.e. do I feed it small mice? Crickets? Anole Lizards? How do you tell its sex? We have no clue as to the Toads previous whereabouts... Therefore no clue as to its former home & keeping. It's a magnificent Beast, and I'd like to save its life.... Any clues as to the care and keeping of such critters would be greatly appreciated! Blessed Beast! I might guess from your comments, however, that you think such experiments are to be called foolish only because they cause anxiety in the participants. Just think of any religious discipline which would integrate the unconscious and the conscious: all of them cause pain, and none of them would be embarked upon if the practitioner knew beforehand that he might be required to suffer the tortures of Hell before reaching his goal. There are Chinese alchemists, ceremonial magicians, and Christian mystics who have found that the path to the Self is almost intolerable. In certain traditions, the new guy has to be tricked into committing himself: only a fool would embark upon the path of knowledge willingly. /s 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718 From: Harley Beer Maker Area: Magical Plants To: Emerald 9 Nov 93 19:57:00 Subject: Re: HEMP UpdReq E> I Ws Just Wondering If Any Of You Out There Know Exactly How To E> Grow A Nice, Well Producing Hemp Plant??? I think the best thing for you to do, if you really want to grow good "hemp" is to use a very good light source and hydroponics in lieu of dirt. I know someone who built a 2'x2' "closet" to go inside his closet. It's about 6 1/2 feet tall, and on the inside he put the guts of a flourescent store sign (he said that it used-to say "Kawasaki" -heh heh) and re-arranged the wiring, and set it up so that the 4, 85w tubes run vertically along the sides of the box, which is painted flat-white on the inside. The effect is very good light diffusion at a basically high amount of light (it averages the amount of light of a cloudy day at noon - we compared it - it would be equivilant of the exposure you'd set a camera for with 200asa film: 125th/sec at f8, I seem to recall). Good light is VERY important, you know. That may have been what happened to your plants. IF you use metal-halide lights, though, you'll produce a LOT of heat. The gestapo looks for this characteristic with helicopters and infra-red cameras. REALLY. If youre roof is a bit warmer than your neighbor's, it will stick out like a beacon and the law will want to investigate. Flourescent is a bit cooler, but almost 400watts of tubes still puts out some heat - especially from the ballast (he mounted his on top of the box with a fan blowing on it). The bottom of his box has two large tupperware containers which generally cover the floor of it. The bottom most one is a reservoir which holds the hydroponic solution, and on the bottom of this reservoir sits a small submersible pump - which is connected to a timer. About 4 times a day the pump switches on and pumps the solution into the top container which is filled with lava rocks. The top container is what the hemp grows in. No dirt, just lava rocks. The level is controlled by an overflow drain (like in your commode tank) and in-between the two containers is a slower drain, so that after the pump switches off, all the solution runs back into the reservoir (which, incidently is painted black so that the light won't cause algea to grow in the nutrient-rich solution.) I think its pretty elaborate, alright. He spent over $200 on it but it has been a very big success. -HBM 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718 From: Xxoo Area: Magical Plants To: Herbs 5 Feb 94 11:52:00 Subject: Re: QUESTION SHROOMS?? "Intent" plays a big part in state law, for the most part and proving intent without proof of a sale/delivery is difficult. Don't deliver, "allow access" to your "amateur garden". Have more than one variety growing at a time and hopefully some edible varieties as well so that you can show that your mycogarden is diverse and not based around anything but hobby interest. Join your local area Mycological Society, and if there isn't one.....form one. Participate in frequent field expeditions and befriend landowners where you obtain permission to explore. I have several large tracts of land where I am always welcome to explore, courtesy of the landowner. I simply call first and wear an orange baseball hat he can spot real easy with his binoculars, if he has to find me (like when his pissed-off Simetaw bull was rampaging around trying to screw anything that would hold still) and warn me off. I tell him what I find and answer any questions he may have about what I find on his property (usually about toxicity/edibility). My specimens can number in the hundreds and I have provided them to a local college for their specimen bank. 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718
