Thelema's most modern incarnation is a philosophy, religion, attitude, approach towards life, set of practices, all of this, some of this, occasionally none of this, promulgated by one Aleister Crowley. Primary precepts include the concept that every person has a "Right and True" place/work in this world, and that each should be dedicated to discovering this "True Will", and applying it. One should mind one's own business, as interference with another's "True Will" is the fault of someone or other's failure to manifest their TW. Basic common sense, so far as the philosophy is concerned, though not so common as could be hoped. Concering the "religious" (for lack of a better word) portions, Crowley's Thelema is based upon the belief that we are currently in the Aeon of Horus, in which the value of the individual and his Right Place in the World is placed above that of the various institutions which have lead to the apparent oppression of individuality and True Will. A breaking down of outmoded values and such, so to speak. Attitude-wise, it is essentially a Western form of Tao. The set of practices involve various ceremonial/ritual magick rites devised/revealed by Crowley, including modifications of the Pentagram and Hexagram rituals, with a few "new" rites involved in various Feasts/Masses. Summing up a bit, Thelema tries (succeeds admirably, I think) to bridge Western Magick with Eastern Mysticism and results in what amounts to an almost monastic discipline towards perfecting the Vehicle so that the True Will can manifest most completely, with the ultimate goals being Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel and overall spiritual/physical "evolution". Of course, being a Thelemite, I must acknowledge that this is the random thought of one individual, and very little of this may be agreed with by any other individual Thelemite. :) Perusing "The Book of the Law" (Liberl AL, Liber Legis, Liber CCXX, and various other names) and possibly the comments thereon by Mr. Crowley, can assist in understanding Thelema, this being the founding document of the concept. For your understanding of it to be based upon my understanding of it, you would also need to read various other works... All of Crowley's, Regardie's cute version of Crowley in "The Eye in the Triangle", The Magick of Thelema by Lon Milo DuQuette for a somewhat useful introduction to the basic practice, Thelema Without Tears by Gerald del Campo (which is mostly amusing but occasionally informative), etc...etc...etc... ------------ As far as how Thelema relates to magickal practice, it is, for the most part (on the surface), similar to any other system designed to exalt Human consciousness to the Divine. Seen from the perspective Crowley apparently had (and which I share), it looks like 1960s Love, Independence, and Willingness to Explore New Forms of Everything, mixed with absolute discipline, brutal self-knowledge, a helluvalot of work, total dedication, and a fine sense of humor. I could do a perhaps better job explaining, if this does not suffice. * SLMR 2.1a * --T-A+G-L-I+N-E--+M-E-A+S-U-R+I-N-G+--G-A+U-G-E-- 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718 From: Rain Area: MagickNet To: Pan 28 Sep 96 01:07:00 Subject: Re: Supper UpdReq On 09-27-96 Pan wrote to Pepper...
