I have some of Budge's works on the langyuage, and a couple of booklets from various museums on Hieroglyphs. Another study that covers some useful ones is called "Reading Egyptian Art" - can't recall the author - who looks at the way the hieroglyphic words/symbols are interpolated into the iconography of the art. Simple example...the commonest hieroglyph for "worship" is the two upraised arms (put those on the hieroglyph for a kneeling man and you have the hieroglyph for "worshipper" for example). "Reading Egyptian Art" then examines the use of the arms in that position in half a dozen statues, paintings, etc. Works with interlinear translation (various Book of the Dead editions etc.) are useful for recognizing at least the commonest spellings and ideographic uses (one picture, one word) of hieroglyphs. And collections like Gods Of The Egyptians (another by Budge) include the hieroglyphic spelling of the Gods' Names. Hope this helps, Paul s 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718
