While I can't speak for Freemasonry, the OTO has an "evaluation" degree (Minerval), where one can join and a mutual evaluation can occur. For that matter, what ever happened to independent investigation? Despite being "secret" societies, there's not much that's *really* secret about such organizations at this point, except perhaps signs, grips, and passwords that are changed on a regular basis. In other words, try a couple of the following: 1) Interact with members of the groups on the nets. There are several OTO members on PODS, for example. My BlueWave packet that contained your message had messages to/from at least two other OTO members, for example. See if they're the kinda folks you can respect from their posts, or if they seem like wankers. 2) Go to your local public library. Do a bit of investigating. 3) Meet a couple of people involved in person (see 1, above). 4) Ask non-members about their experiences with members. 5) Attend any public rituals they may have--the OTO performs the Gnostic Mass, for example. Tam had a whole school like that one time--they had ridiculous disciplinary standards. She got detention one time for writing her name on the left side of the paper instead of the right side , and the dress code went to amazing lengths in its zeal to anticipate any remote possibility of gang garb. No 'writing' of any kind of any item of clothing, no colored shoelaces , that kinda stuff. Still, she managed to do very well academically. We hit a snag with home study--I have to push her to keep her work up again--she'd rather fuck off, and I'd rather she didn't! So is Jaz artistically and/or magically inclined? Etymologically, sabbath is the day of `rest'. The word ultimately comes from Hebrew shabbath, a derivative of shabath `rest'. English acquired it via Greek sabboton and Latin sabbatum. The modern use of the derived sabbatical {16} for a `period away from normal duties,' first recorded in the 19th century, evolved from its original application to the one year in seven when, according to ancient Jewish law, land had to be left fallow. French samedi `Saturday' comes from the same source. While English changed over the last 2000 years, so did the original names of the original holidays celebrated by the Indo-Anglicans. It seems quite a normal progress, linguisticaly speaking, that the holidays celebrated by the indo-Europeans would be expresses as `a period away from normal duties'. Thus you have the the Wiccan `sabbats' Aho!
