JN> We had a rather heated discussion of the value of Tolkein workings JN> earlier this year. Greetings, Josh; It is interesting to hear that some people in N. America have recently been doing workings with Tolkien "characters". Can you tell me (roughly) where these workings have been done -- e.g. California, Oregon, East Coast? -- or which characters have been invoked, other than Bombadil? It is my understanding that first contact was made in England in the mid-80s, by a working magical group, with certain Elven figures, Mithrandir, and a few other types, and this led in subsequent years to "higher" Silmarillion contacts with the Valar. As you can imagine, the initial event raised more than a few eye-brows, but in Britain there are 2 or 3 groups derived from the original one still working with materials that have arisen. (For all I know there may be many more who have picked up on Tolkien separately). Mithrandir (Gandalf), of course, comes across very much in the mold of a Merlin or Dee -- Wise Old Druid -- although with more depth, and Galadriel very much a nature goddess, but the Valar seem uniquely sublime & potent. The consensus is that Tolkien seems to have tuned into an ancient and forgotten, but distinct and still viable pantheon. JN> I really don't see that the power associated with a god-form -- or any JN> other symbol, for that matter -- has much at all to do with the amount JN> of worship it has had. Perhaps not so much the "amount" as the "quality"? ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 201434369420143436942014343694201434369420143436942014343694718 From: Gaia Area: MagickNet To: All 4 Nov 94 02:22:00 Subject: strange symbol UpdReq and Euphrates@93:9000/2.0 dicoursed upon Loreena E C> You do realize that Loreena is not pagan, but a Xian E > C> mystic well in touch with her ancestry.
