(he had been comatose for about 5 weeks.) during the funeral, (a jewish funeral), this woman read a prayer. in every instance where the word 'God' appeared in the text, she would say, "God, my father, A___" (caused quite a stir, for sure). after the funeral, she told a friend of mine that the leader of her group has told her that her father is alive, and is living in ethiopia. (this woman positively believes this to be true.) because of her father's death, this woman will soon be inheriting a good chunk of money. also, due to her father's death, she seems to have become more caught up in the group she is affiliating with. (i think she is pretty vulnerable right now. her father's death came as quite a shock.) anyway, i think that this leader of this group, has sunk his claws into her, more strongly than ever, in hopes of getting hold of her inheritance. she has recently shaved her head, and has informed people that she is moving to jamaica with the leader of the group, where they will be buying some property. (probably with her inheritance money). this woman's sister is really not currently there for her, because she is in too much of her own grief over her father, and she is taking off to europe for an extended vacation with her boyfriend. the woman's parents were divorced, and though i don't know her mother, her mother seems to be off in her own world. (IOW, this girl doesn't have much of a support system outside of this group that she has hooked up with.) i'm not completley sure what i'm even trying to ask here. but, i guess i'm wondering what your thoughts are about what this girl's friends and family should or should not be doing. (i only minimally know this woman, so i'm not in much of a position to do anything about the situation even if i wanted to. however, i'm trying to give advice to a friend who does have some regular contact with this woman.) any thoughts about this? Oh, I definitely think 'by the book' workings are valuable. I just don't think anything should become so technical that it degenerates into dogma. Personally I know I want to learn and practice in a 'just so' manner before experimenting with new rituals, etc., and my personal and probably not nearly humble enough opinion is that everyone should become proficient in the 'traditional' ways of doing things before experimenting...but I'm also a great believer in improvising and branching out. It's probably due to individual experiences-- I'd discovered that traditional or semi-traditional methods worked in other areas, and so stuck with them for a long time. When anyone suggested something radically different I tended to assume it wouldn't work *for me* even if it worked perfectly well for someone else. Then, on an impulse, I started making *subtle* changes in my own long-term practices--and found out that also worked. I've incorporated some of the changes, and omitted others, but the 'lesson' for me was that, just because something works, and works well, it doesn't mean that other things can't work equally well--in some cases better. Anyway, I'm a great believer in tradition; I just see potential for *new* traditions later down the line, if that makes sense! >> more emphasis on ecstatic techniques, ie. chant, dance, etc. i >> started experimenting with these kinds of things, as well as >> incorporating more sense of gesture into my ritual. i found the >> results to be really great. much of what i have been experimenting >RD> >RD> That sounds--dare I say it--almost Tantric to me! ;> > > really? how so, outside of perhaps chant (mantra) and gesture > (mudra)? (though i guess that's enough similarity even there). can > you be any more specific about how tantra incorporates these things? Definitely mantra and mudra, also dance. There are ritual dances (mystic dance) performed by people that are every bit as regimented as anything the most conservative ceremonialist could imagine, and as one of the "64 Arts" it's highly valued. Dance, whether performed, observed, or participated in, is used as a tool to evoke and channel certain emotional, physical, and spiritual states. Mudra and dance are both also potent means of communicating things that are difficult to describe in words. The _Hevajra_ says: "If songs are sung, let them be sung in joy. If dance is done when joy has arisen, let it bring release." Dance, asana, and mudra can be preparation for ritual, part of ritual, or ritual in and of themselves. (Mantra also, duuuh ). One of the things I personally learned early on is that breath must become the mantra; the body the yantra. Dance can invoke or aspect divinity in the dancer and observer. Mudra can convey an "idea" which is difficult to express. Mantra focuses mind and breath, and does all the above as well. When a couple engages in certain pranayam techniques and mantra together, they become 'linked' and harmonized. The specific methods of mantra, mudra, dance, etc., have their own meanings, but one of the commonalities is that, it assists with leaving behind the 'individual ego' and enables one to aspect the divine Self more readily. Mudra combined with touch is a way of channelling sexual energy, offering psychic protection and reaching deeper levels of the mind. And either implicit or explicit is the understanding that for all the necessity of using the 'correct method,' spontaneity *will* take over sooner or later, and that this is an auspicious thing. Raising, channelling, and releasing energy are at the root of a lot of practices--but ecstatic union with divinity is the GOAL. > BTW, what does ROTFL mean? There are those who believe that everything concerning magic - deities and their evocation/invocation, pathworking, etc are simply mental imagery for aspects of one's inner self, other believe everything to be externally and independently real, as one's house or car can be said to be real. In short - its a personal thing as to how you view the world, etc. 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Frater Xavaaq Area: MagickNet To: Ace Lightning 8 Sep 93 07:57:32 Subject: Re: THAT TOME Sent UpdReq It interesting to hear your reaction to mensa..
