Anybody got any ideas as to why seven is so important? Well, for starters, you have seven days of the week that correspond to the seven known planets (we're talking about the Old Days, remember), the seven whole tones of the Western musical scale, and Seven Brides for Seven... oops, sorry. I've snagged it whole to stuff into my evolving FAQ file on the N., and will some day trace down all those leads. You've offered a number of tangents (about the 'mystery' religions) that are useful...I've got THAT general heading on my 'list' of things to do some day too. Once in a while I find writers out here who make me want to ask "Who _IS_ this guy, anyway?" (Wishing I knew more details about you.) Both you and Mark O. Garrison merit that distinction. I'm starting to ask it of Josh Norton, too. Some day I shall gratify myself enormously by sticking the 3 of you into a room, tossing in something like a golden apple of Occult conversation, and watching the fun. This has been great. Hi Dominic, I don't have the reference now, but if I were you I'd hunt down a couple of anthologies of Isaac Asimov's essays in the S&SF magazines, and later in his own magazine. SOMEWHERE in the formidable volume of his efforts, he wrote a lengthy and charming essay on numbers, numerology, and how such things get to be sacred and secret. I vaguely recall that he treats this number at some length, neatly inter-relating it to several early calendars, the fact that it is prime, and so on. I think he also might have had some interesting Pythagorean things to say of it. Later I'll try to hunt down another book I've got hereabouts, on numbers. Just now I'm cramped for time.
