I hope to begin a course of study soon, but I'm taking my time. Isaac's references to burnout are something that I take to heart and I can appreciate the effects of "initial overexuberance". In 84' I founded a computer users group (still active) and a few BBS's. They both always remind me of the importance of patience and persistance. I didn't see any reference to your name in my "less than recent" version of The Druids Progress. What are your duties as National Members Advocate? ADF officers have seemed very accessable, so I'm curious as to how your role in representing members is manifested. As you can see, I am unfamiliar with ADF structure at this time. I've read many of Isaac's early DP excerpts, but I've much to learn. If you give me a better idea of your role in ADF, I'd be most appreciative to be able to take advantage of your knowledge and guidance during this adjustment phase. There isn't a complete abscence. We have a lot of poetry and song. Those give some substantial clues to the culture (in more than a few ways) as does the language of the time. Maybe your instructor was incompetant. ----------------------------------------------------------------- He/she certainly was! I'd never laugh at a student trying earnestly to get something right--at least not consistently. I mean, a one- time guffaw if the student says something outrageous and the class is laughing is understandable--immediately followed by an explanation to the student of why everyone is laughing. But consistent giggles to oneself is not only unprofessional but discourages what might become a fine scholar, or at the least, a diligent student of the language in question. None of my language teachers ever laughed at me. My Irish teacher does not now, in spite of the fact I'm sure some of my baby Irish comes out really messed up. By "Except in Japanese", I meant that there is more to learn than just the characters. There are a few points of the grammar I find quite obscure. (Like determining when to use "wa" and when to use "ga".) But maybe that's just me. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Nope, it's not just you. I still get "wa" and "ga" confused and I've been speaking this language for over 20 years. "Wa" and "ga" mistakes are common in everyone but native speakers, and sometimes they make them. There are rules to help out, but the rules certainly don't cover every situation. I find that the grammar gets clearer as I go, but my students certainly don't find that. I guess the problem is that one has to study an oriental language so much longer before things begin to make sense than one does an Indo-European language. But I still prefer the Oriental languages. Maybe it's that something in me resonates with them.
