I've been living in Ocean City for 7 months now and I have to either go back to Philadelphia or import Philadelphians for our group rituals. I have suggested starting a South Jersey networking group. The reception I've received from the few pagans I've met in the area (for few, read 3) has been lukewarm, to say the least. I'd be interested in discussing with you what we can do about this... There are lots of words that can only be distinguished by the inflection the speaker puts on them. I.e., whether his voice rises or falls at certain points, and by how much the pitch of the voices changes. This use of tonality is much more complex than in Western languages, and very difficult for English-speakers to get used to. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, I studied Chinese, and spoke a bit of it at one time (no longer, I'm afraid, that was back in my graduate school days). Believe it or not, I had a lot more trouble pleasing my French teachers than my Chinese. I have had musical training since I was 9 or so, so the tones don't give me problems. But I never COULD get the frigging French pronunciation done well enough, I suppose. I'd say a word, the teacher would say, no, no, it's this. I'd try again, and the teacher would say, no, no, it's this. Sigh. Never could hear the difference. Like I say, gimme an Oriental language any day! But I guess it's to each his/her own. In the original Golden Dawn system, the mental discipline and memory develpment needed to learn all that stuff was as important as what you learn. A wide knowledge base is also helpful in understanding other systems and points of view. //Phil// 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718 From: Karl Lembke Area: MagickNet To: Josh Norton 12 Sep 92 09:12:12 Subject: Irish Sources and Stuff UpdReq JN>ER> Give me an Oriental language any day of the week! I found it to be a very easy language to speak, and except for the problem of learning 30 - 50 thousand characters, I would recommend it as a viable world language. The tonal quality of the language is not that much of a problem. (At least not in Mandarin. Probably not in Cantonese, either, but I'd be guessing there. Everything was all inside-out and backwards. Backwards I can handle. I had no trouble with German. But the inside-out part really got me. My brains began to leak out my ears.
