Just a nitpick on spelling FISH in Greek. It is not Christ's name but a 
notariqon which starts Iesou Kriste (and the rest of the sentence has the 
initials theta-upsilon-sigma).
 That is, you are correct, the historical explanation of the use of the icthus 
symbol by the early Christians.
