I've only been looking into this magick stuff for a couple years, so you've got quite a jump on me there. I missed your original post, but if the subject is any indication of your question, I suggest that you find a copy of _The Rise of Magic in Early Medieval Europe_ by Valerie Flint (Princeton, 1991). It addresses how the Church absorbed many of the prevailing pagan practices and opposed others. For the revival of magick (Xian or otherwise) during the renaissance, anything by Frances Yates is great! OK, since you asked.... In the threeish years I've been studying occult esoterica, I've encountered Wiccans galore, generic Pagans, Celtic practitioners of various types, several Qaballists, a couple of Rosicrucians, a few Enochian-magic types, some Egyptologists, the odd OTOist, several Thelemites, and some folks who I couldn't categorize if I tried real hard. I've looked into Buddhism, the I Ching, Tarot, scrying, alchemy, Qaballah, Arthurian mythology & magick, herbalism, a light touch of Taoism, and Hermetics, all to varying degrees. While I find an element of truth/substance/plain-ol'-good-stuff in all of this, there seems to be an inverse relation between my degree of interest/aptitude in a given arena, and the availability of means to further my studies therein. I know that LOTS of people bemoan the fact that they can't find a Teacher--I've seen it in other echoes fairly frequently. I've come to accept the facts that "When the ears of the student are ready to hear, then cometh the lips to fill them with wisdom", and "The lips of Wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding." So, my tendency so far has been to continue studying a given subject/topic/path/concept/etc. until I can't find any more resources, get frustrated at my lack of progress for a bit, then find a new tack and launch into it until I run out of road that way. I guess if I were to try to make this rambling into one coherent question , it'd be something like "What do you do when your path comes to a brick wall?" While it's kinda nice having such a diverse field of study these last few years, I'm a little concerned about the depth (or more accurately, the lack thereof) of the knowledge & experience I've gotten thus far. If any of you remembers the Star Trek: Next Generation episode wherein Cap't. Picard slowly learns to communicate with a species who speak in metaphors, you might understand my frustration, and at the same time the drive that each little "breakthru" in understanding furthers, and the hope that each new piece falling into place instills, even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Any ideas, anyone? Does this sound familiar? How did some of you "find your path", or whatever other Shirley-MacLaine-ism you want to apply? --Tal ___ * SLMR 2.0 #2266 * Shaka, when the walls fell.
