Hi John! Sorry to take so long to answer, but I was out of town....
My primary reason for picking .GIF format over .TIFF, or any other 
format, was that the electronic versions are primarily meant to be 
viewed either online or with any basic word-processor, rather than being 
printed out. The idea is to make it easily and generally accessible, not 
to make it convenient to print out. And since GIF file readers are as 
common as mud (whereas TIFF requires an expensive WP or painting 
program) it seemed the better choice.
Frankly, if I was going to release clear and printable versions of the 
diagrams, I'd go with Postscript or some other vector format, not with a 
crappy dot-format. 
... It IS as bad as you think and they ARE out to get you.

Hi Esteban! Welcome to the madhouse.
My own experience is that practically anybody can get _some_ sort of 
result using the Calls and Tablet names. But the amount of benefit you 
get out of it is directly related to what you bring to the effort in the 
way of practical experience, knowledge of various myth-systems and 
cabalistic classification systems, initiatory systems (magickal or 
otherwise), etc.
Getting good stuff out of it is also related to the amount of work 
you're willing to do.
... Just a tap dancer in the canoe of life.
