From: Crat Area: ENOCHIAN To: All 14 Sep 92 09:14:02 Subject: Excess UpdReq In reading various authors, including Dee, on enochian ritual, I am more and more struck by the "additions" to the rituals as the subject "matures". In the early parts of "Enochian Evocation of John Dee", which purports to be from his diaries, the rituals appear to be extremely straightforward. As the book progresses, flags, rings, tables, and other paraphenalia are added to an increasingly complicated list of calls. By the time Crowley gets a hold of the subject several centuries later, the "christian" elements of the angels are subsumed in his cross-cultural invocations and calls to what seems like every god he ever came across are inflicted upon the practitioner. I can understand Dee and his Elizabethean mentality wanting to expand and complicate the subject and the Golden Dawn wanting to obscure the subject from dilettantes, but understanding the reasons does not make me happier or better informed. Would anyone care to express opinions on what they see as the basics of Enochian magickal workings? Obviously banishings were not "required" originally, but do they enhance the ritual? Is Dee's work original complete, or does it need the later additions of this later work and/or that of groups like the GD? If you don't get that, try the Mundane echo. Waiting to hear from you... LOVE/WILL CHEN 718499927771849992777184999277718499927771849992777184999277718
